Hans Nieuwlands Receives Victor Z. Brink Award
On 9 July 2008, ECIIA Past President Hans Nieuwlands, CIA, CCSA, CGAP, received The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Victor Z. Brink Award for Distinguished Service during The IIA’s 2008 International Conference, held in San Francisco.

The award, established in honor of Victor Z. Brink, one of The IIA’s founders, recognizes an IIA member who has made extraordinary contributions to the internal audit profession, globally, through their consistent and exemplary IIA involvement and service. “I am honored to recognize Hans for his leadership and dedication to the profession,” said IIA Chairman of the Board Gerald D. Cox, CIA, MIIA. “Hans has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the internal audit profession in Europe and the globalization of The IIA.” As a volunteer for The IIA for almost 20 years, Hans has demonstrated excellent leadership, most notably in Europe, as president of IIA-Benelux, president of IIA-Netherlands, and president of the European Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditing (ECIIA). While a board member of IIA-Benelux, Hans saw the need to split the institute to better manage the needs of members speaking four languages in three countries. Now, IIA-Belgium, IIA-Netherlands, and IIA-Luxembourg have more than 4,000 members. He has also traveled the world to encourage the start-up of institutes in Poland, Thailand, Croatia, and Romania. During his presidency of the ECIIA from 2006-07, Hans increased the number of advocacy activities with the European Union, resulting in IIA-Romania, IIA-Iceland, and IIA-Estonia joining the ECIIA. Hans was also the adviser of three ECIIA conferences in Turkey, Cyprus, and Finland, and a book highlighting the achievements of the ECIIA during its 25th Anniversary was issued in 2007 under his leadership.  Hans served on The IIA’s Board of Research Education & Advisors (BREA) and as a member on the Board of Trustees of the IIA Research Foundation (IIARF). At the request of the IIARF, Hans wrote Sustainability and Internal Auditing, published in 2006 and currently in reprint.  Since 2002, Hans has been a member of the editorial advisory board for Internal Auditor, where he has reviewed numerous articles, and has had two articles published in the magazine. In addition, he helped prepare the bid for the 2007 International Conference in Amsterdam. Beginning July 16 2008, Hans will serve as Chief Executive of IIA-Netherlands.
